Q: What exactly is Bandworx?

Bandworx is a high-energy, after-school rock and pop band program designed specifically for kids and teens aged 8 to 18. Instead of practicing solo in a bedroom, students join a band, learn how to collaborate, arrange songs, and gear up for live stage performances.

 

Q: Who is behind Bandworx?

We were founded by the owner of Stay At Home Music, Toronto’s trusted in-home music school that has been sending top-tier instructors to living rooms across the GTA since 2005. After years of teaching students one-on-one, we realized they needed an outlet to bring those skills together, crank up the amps, and experience the pure joy of making music as a team.

Experience & Age Groups

Q: Does my kid need to be a musical prodigy to join?

Not at all, but this isn't a "day one" absolute beginner program. We welcome all skill levels, though having a basic foundation on their instrument (roughly 6 months of lessons or a solid grasp of basic chords/rhythms) ensures they can jump right into the mix. We carefully match students based on age, instrument, and experience so everyone feels confident.

Q: How are the age groups divided?

We accommodate ages 8–18, broken down into balanced, peer-appropriate cohorts:

  • Juniors: Ages 8–11

  • Intermediates: Ages 12–14

  • Seniors: Ages 15–18

 

Note: We group kids not just by birth year, but by musical compatibility and vibe. 

Instruments & Gear

Q: What instruments can my child play in Bandworx?

We are building classic rock, pop, and indie band setups. We look for:

  • Electric & Acoustic Guitar

  • Bass Guitar

  • Drums & Percussion

  • Keyboards / Piano

  • Vocalists

Q: Do we need to bring our own instruments?

To keep things simple, we supply the heavy lifting. Here is what to bring versus what we provide:​

  • Drums

    • What We Provide: Full professional drum kit

    • What You Bring: Drumsticks

  • Guitar / Bass

    • What We Provide: High-quality amplifiers and cables

    • What You Bring: Your own guitar or bass, plus an instrument strap

  • Keyboards

    • What We Provide: Digital keyboards and stands

    • What You Bring: Just your hands!

  • Vocals

    • What We Provide: Microphones, stands, and a PA system

    • What You Bring: Your vocal cords and a water bottle​

Logistics & Scheduling

Q: Where and when do the weekly sessions happen?

Bandworx runs right after school on weekdays, with select slots on weekends. Sessions are held at our dedicated, sound-treated rehearsal spaces in Toronto. Once your child is placed in a band, we will lock in a consistent weekly timeslot tailored to that specific group.

Q: How long is each rehearsal?

Each band meets once a week for a 120-minute session. This includes a mix of supervised rehearsal time, songwriting/arranging workshops, and direct coaching from an active, professional Toronto musician.

Performances & Safety

Q: Will they get to play a real show?

Absolutely. Music isn't meant to be kept in a vacuum. Every term culminates in a live showcase performance at a real Toronto music venue. Parents, friends, and fans are all invited to watch them rock out on a real stage with professional lights and sound.

Q: How do you handle safety and supervision?

Because Bandworx is built on the foundation of Stay At Home Music, student safety is second nature to us. Every single coach undergoes rigorous background checks and has extensive experience mentoring youth. We maintain an inclusive, encouraging environment where safety and positive peer dynamics are the top priorities.
